Service Learning
Service learning (also known as engaged learning, applied learning, or community engagement) combines community service with academic learning, allowing students to apply new knowledge and develop practical skills. Through coursework, students critically analyze a systemic problem or societal issue related to their academic focus or course, and which the service addresses. Research shows that this highly effective teaching method enhances learning outcomes, increases student retention, makes learning more relevant, fosters civic participation, provides career exploration and preparation opportunities, and improves graduation rates.
Some faculty members participate by integrating service into course curricula directly related to specific course goals and objectives. This method helps students make explicit connections between the relevance of their academic experience and their future professional lives in society.
