Degree Requirements
The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree is an upper- level undergraduate degree that is designed for students to continue their higher education after completing an Associate in Arts (AA) or Associate in Science (AS) degree. Lake-Sumter State College currently offers the Bachelor of Applied Science in Leadership (BAS-L).
Enrollment Requirements for Upper-Division Courses in Leadership
Upon notification of acceptance into the degree program and prior to beginning any upper-division courses, students are required to:
- Meet with the BAS academic advisor to determine needed coursework to complete the specific bachelor’s degree.
- Enroll in the program’s Cornerstone course in the first semester of the program. For the BAS in Leadership, the Cornerstone course is MAN 3240 Organizational Behavior, Organizational Behavior.
All upper-division (3000-4000 level) courses have prerequisite and/or co-requisite courses. It is the student’s responsibility to work with the BAS academic advisor every semester, prior to registration, to assure proper course planning throughout the program of study and timely completion of all graduation requirements.
Leadership Bachelor of Applied Science Degree
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Leadership (BAS-L) program at Lake-Sumter State College educates leaders to effectively manage their organizations and positively impact their communities. Graduates of this program have diverse career paths open to them in a broad range of industries including sales, retail, small business, government, public safety, healthcare, criminal justice, and not-for-profit organizations. The BAS-L degree program is offered fully online and offers a flexible schedule.
Students select a concentration from the following:
- Criminal Justice Leadership
The Criminal Justice Leadership concentration is for those interested in pursuing leadership positions in Law Enforcement and Corrections agencies.
- Health Services Administration
The Health Services Administration concentration educates leaders to effectively manage their organizations and positively impact their communities. Graduates of this program have diverse career paths open to them in any healthcare setting or in organizations that support the diversity of healthcare services.
- Human Resource Management
The Human Recourse Management concentration is for those interested in pursuing a position in the Human Resource field in a wide range of organizations.
- Sport Leadership
The Sport Leadership concentration is for those interested in pursuing positions in sports leadership and management fields.
- Organizational Management
The Organizational Management concentration prepares individuals to take on leadership roles in various environments in the public, private, for-profit, and not-for-profit sectors.
- Project Management
The Project Management concentration prepares individuals to manage the various aspects of large-scale projects in multiple industries.

- In addition to meeting the General Education requirements, baccalaureate degree-seeking students must meet the State of Florida's foreign language and civic literacy requirements prior to graduation.

Admission Requirements for Bachelor of Applied Science in Leadership
- Completion of an Associate in Arts (A.A.) from a regionally accredited college or university, or
- Associate in Science (A.S.) degree, including a minimum of 15 semester credit hours of LSSC's current General Education core requirements from a regionally accredited college or university, or
- Students who have completed equivalent coursework from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum of 60 transferable semester credit hours, including 18 semester credit hours of LSSC's current General Education core requirements, will be considered on a case-by-case basis, but may require additional coursework prior to acceptance into a baccalaureate degree program.
- Completion of all developmental (college preparatory) coursework as required by placement testing.
- Eligibility for Gordon Rule mathematics courses through placement testing or the successful completion of required prerequisite coursework.
- Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in all post-secondary coursework.
Note: Courses transferred from other institutions must be formally evaluated for currency and equivalency credit.
- Related upper-division (3000-4000 level) coursework and supporting documentation must be reviewed for consideration of meeting program requirements and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The student is responsible for providing course descriptions and any additional supporting documentation requested in order to make this determination. All course substitutions must be approved in writing by the AVP of Workforce Development.

Application Process
- Visit https://www.lssc.edu/academics/bachelor/ for program information or contact the Advising Office at 352-435-5034 to make an appointment to discuss your eligibility for the BAS in Leadership program.
- If all Admissions Requirements are met, submit the LSSC Admission Application by the posted deadline with all of the following
- designated application fee
- official high school transcript or GED scores, sent directly to the LSSC Admissions and Records Office
- official transcripts from all previously attended post- secondary institutions, sent directly to the LSSC Admissions and Records Office,
- the Florida Residency Affidavit and required documentation.
- Once all transcripts have been received and evaluated, students receive written notification of acceptance status from the Admissions and Records Office, along with information regarding the next steps in the enrollment process.

The foundational core courses are required for all students in the BAS-Leadership program. These courses are intentionally structured to complement one another as corequisites and will provide you with a cohesive learning experience. You are advised to complete the courses in the provided sequence, based on your starting semester, to ensure timely degree completion.

Graduation Requirements for BAS in Leadership
Completion of all program requirements, including a minimum of 120 semester credit hours, comprised of:
- 36 semester credit hours as designated in the LSSC General Education requirements. (Students who enter the baccalaureate program with a completed AA or baccalaureate degree or with official transcripts documenting “General Education Requirements Met” from a Florida College System or State University System institution shall be considered to have satisfied LSSC’s General Education requirements.)
- 36 semester credit hours of transferable associate degree electives, technical, and professional support coursework. At least 12 of these semester credit hours must be designated as approved Professional Support Courses with a grade of C or higher.
- 48 semester credit hours of upper-division coursework in the major.
- Completion of all upper-division (3000-4000 level) courses with a grade of C or higher.
- Fulfill the Florida Foreign Language Competence requirement for bachelor’s degrees, even if this requires the student to exceed 120 total semester credit hours. Students may fulfill this requirement by successfully completing one of the following options:
- Two sequential high school credits in one language.
- Two sequential college-credit courses in a foreign language or American Sign Language.
- Minimum designated College Level Examination Program (CLEP) scores in Spanish, French, or German.
- Completion of a college degree or equivalent, or high school diploma from a foreign country where English courses were studied as a foreign language. This must be stated on the official evaluated transcript. See additional information in Coursework from International Institutions.
- Minimum of 25 percent of the total semester credit hours counted toward the baccalaureate degree must be earned from LSSC (at least 30 of the total 120 semester credit hours).
- Minimum of 15 upper-division (3000-4000 level) semester credit hours, including the Capstone course, must be earned from LSSC.
- Overall cumulative grade point average of 2.0, including all upper- and lower-division LSSC college-credit coursework and all transferred coursework.
- Fulfill all financial obligations to the College before the degree will be awarded and before a diploma or transcript will be released.
- As per the amended Florida Rule 6A-10.02413, prior to the award of an associate in arts or baccalaureate degree, LSSC students under the 2021-2022 Catalog and thereafter must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through one of the following options prior to graduation:
- successfully passing POS 2041 American National Government American National Government or AMH 2020 U.S. History Since 1877 U.S. History Since 1877 and achieving a 60% or higher on the Florida Civic Literacy Exam , or
- successfully passing a prescribed assessment:
- AP Government & Politics Test: United States (passing score of 3), or
- AP U.S. History Test (passing score of 4), or
- CLEP: American Government (passing score of 50)

Foreign Language Competence Requirement
In addition to the specified course requirements, baccalaureate degree seeking students must meet the State of Florida's foreign language and civics literacy requirements prior to graduation. See Graduation Requirements for BAS in Leadership.

Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all program and general education courses in order to qualify for graduation.
Students must complete 25% of each program's total credit hours at LSSC.
